Whereas Greek sculptors were concerned with an ideal state of form and being objective in its meaning, the Indian artist is interested in achieving a certain inner vision. His subjective world is different in spirit from the untroubled attitude of the Greek who idealizes nature and works on the basis of visual experience. The Indian's point of view is conceptual rather than perceptual. He works from mental images achieved through contemplation, not from gazing at models. Indian art is not fine Art with a capital A in our western meaning; it exists to produce a desired state of mind or body. |
