Fortune magazine was founded by Henry Luce in February of 1930, four months after the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and three months after my birth, the crash that led to the Great Depression. Luce wrote "We will not be over-optimistic. We will recognize that this business slump may last as long as an entire year."
Single copies cost $1 when the Sunday New York Times cost only a nickel.
Thirty thousand subscribers received the first issue. The editors published a classy magazine using the best printing, paper and case binding available at the time on an oversize 11x14 inch format. In the issues I used, the very best graphic designers, painters, illustrators and photographers had been hired to compliment the stories related to World War II strategy and post-war planning. There were many stories about and by important leaders and philosophers of the world, and of course, articles about business. |
